The MSc in Endocrinology comprises eight modules (180 credits) completed over two years, combining advanced postgraduate study across adult endocrinology with research methodologies, critical appraisal, and an independent Professional Project.
During Year 1, you’ll study disorders affecting the hypothalamus and pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands, parathyroid function and calcium and bone metabolism, reproductive endocrinology, and endocrine-related cancer. Across these areas, you’ll develop your understanding of endocrine physiology and pathophysiology alongside approaches to investigation, diagnosis, monitoring, and management.
In Year 2, you’ll develop the research and critical appraisal skills required to investigate an endocrinology-related area in greater depth. You’ll explore research methodologies and the evaluation of evidence before applying this learning through a supervised Professional Project relevant to your professional interests.
During the programme, you’ll study:
- Disorders of the Hypothalamus and Pituitary – explore hypothalamic-pituitary physiology and hormonal signalling alongside disorders including pituitary tumours, acromegaly, Cushing’s disease, prolactinomas, TSHomas, hypopituitarism, and associated congenital and genetic disorders.

Module 1 Module 1: Disorders of the Hypothalamus and Pituitary +
Aims of the module:
Analyse and evaluate the complex physiological principles governing hypothalamic-pituitary axes, and critically examine common disorders affecting these structures, synthesising current research to inform advanced clinical practice.
Module Content:
Students will examine the physiology of hypothalamic-anterior pituitary-end organ axes and posterior pituitary function, with detailed study of anterior and posterior pituitary hormones and hypothalamic signals. The curriculum encompasses hormonal signaling mechanisms including intracrine, paracrine, and endocrine effects, alongside second messenger pathways. Clinical aspects cover non-functional pituitary tumours (presentation, diagnosis, investigation, management, and surveillance) and functional pituitary disorders including acromegaly, Cushing's disease, prolactinomas, TSHomas, and various forms of hypopituitarism. The module also addresses congenital hypopituitarism and associated genetic disorders, integrating medical and surgical management approaches for these complex neuroendocrine conditions.

The module examines the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of adrenal gland disorders. Students will explore adrenal anatomy and physiology, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and regulatory pathways of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Aims of the module:
Critically appraise the interrelationships between parathyroid, calcium, and bone physiology and pathophysiology, and apply this advanced understanding to formulate and justify complex clinical management strategies for related endocrine disorders.
Module Content:
Students will examine hypercalcaemia and hypocalcaemia, including investigation protocols and management strategies, with a focus on Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcaemia and acute severe hypercalcaemia. The curriculum covers primary hyperparathyroidism (presentation, diagnosis, and evidence-based management including surgical referral criteria and calcium receptor mimetics) and secondary/tertiary hyperparathyroidism (addressing vitamin D deficiency and renal failure contexts). Bone health assessment is addressed through DEXA interpretation and osteoporosis management, with critical evaluation of pharmacological interventions including bisphosphonates, SERMs, strontium ranelate, vitamin D/calcium supplementation, and calcitonin, emphasising mechanism of action and adherence to current clinical guidelines.

Critically evaluate and synthesise current evidence on the presentation, investigation, diagnosis, and management of reproductive endocrine disorders, developing advanced skills in clinical decision-making and patient care strategies.
Module Content:
This module examines gonadal physiology, sex hormone profiles, and reproductive disorders. Students will explore genetic conditions (e.g. Turner, Klinefelter, Kallmann syndromes), polycystic ovarian syndrome management, and infertility investigations. The curriculum addresses female hypogonadism (premature ovarian failure, menopause) with critical evaluation of hormone replacement therapies and their safety profiles. Male hypogonadism is covered through diagnostic approaches and treatment modalities, including testosterone replacement options and emerging therapies. The module concludes with erectile dysfunction management, preparing students to provide evidence-based care for patients with reproductive endocrine disorders.

Conduct in-depth analysis of the presentation, investigation, diagnosis, and management of endocrine-related cancers, critically appraising current research to propose and justify innovative approaches to patient care and treatment.
Module Content:
Students will explore thyroid cancer variants (follicular, medullary, anaplastic), including epidemiology, evidence-based treatment approaches, radioiodine ablation, surveillance protocols, and long-term hormone replacement strategies. The curriculum addresses adrenal cancer presentation, investigation, management, and adjunctive therapies including chemotherapeutic principles. Neuroendocrine tumour components cover classification systems, diagnostic approaches (including chromogranin assays and somatostatin scintigraphy), management strategies featuring somatostatin analogues, carcinoid syndrome manifestations and treatment, and the relationship between NETs and hereditary conditions such as Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia. Throughout, emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary management and current research in endocrine oncology.

Module 1 Module 1: Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal +
Module Aims
To prepare students for an independent research-based project by developing skills in selecting, appraising, discriminating, using evidence and appropriate research/investigative methods to address relevant topics for investigation.
Module Content
- Basic terminology used in epidemiology and research studies such as prevalence, incidence, sensitivity, specificity, false positive and false negatives.
- Interpreting graphical representation of epidemiological and statistical data such as Kaplan-Meier Curves, Forrest Plots and Meta-analyses.
- Calculations used in the assessment of research data such as relative risk, absolute risk, number needed to treat.
- Basic statistical tests and their applications including T-Tests, ANOVA, Chi-Squared Tests.
- Methodologies used in endocrine research such as insulin tolerance testing, short synacthen testing, OGTT, measures of insulin resistance and GH testing.
- Research on issues such as health outcomes and quality of life using bespoke questionnaires such as the SF-36 as well as other modes of assessment.
- Fundamentals of evidence-based practice and its application into the clinical setting.
- Establishing patient registers and the value of disease specific registers.
- Research into educational principles for both doctor and patient. Understanding what may work for the patient as well as the educator.

Module 2 Module 2: Professional Project +

- To develop skills relevant to scientific publications.
Module Content
The professional project must be endocrinology-related and relevant to the person's practice. This project may comprise of:
- Literature review and appraisal of the evidence.
- Audit of practice including organisational or clinical.
- Review and implementation of evidence-based practice.
- Qualitative or quantitative research (formal research involving human subjects is not anticipated).
- Case-based and quality of service review with critical appraisal.
- Case report, review of literature and organisational assessment.

- Synthesise advanced knowledge of endocrinology research to conceptualise, plan, and execute an original investigation that contributes significant insights to the field.
- Critically evaluate practice and suggest improvements or change in an endocrinology setting.

You’ll learn through our flexible, interactive online platform: clinical cases, assignments and collaboration with fellow students at times that suit your rota. There is no fixed timetable — log in daily to take part in the week’s activities.
Groups are small, typically 10–20 students, so discussion stays close to practice. A dedicated tutor and the Student Support Team stay with you through the module.

Assessment methods
The masters in endocrinology course places assessments at the heart of the learning process through the employment of clinical scenarios to enhance problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. Since the scenarios act as a focus for learning and assessment, the two are intrinsically linked.
The first seven modules on the course have the same assessment format and for all modules, you will be assigned a dedicated expert tutor. Your tutor will then facilitate case discussions with the group, whilst monitoring, assessing and marking your work throughout. You will also participate in a combination of module activities that may be group and/or individual based, dependent on the module.
These innovative teaching methods enable you to envisage the translation of your studies into your every day work and practice.
For the final module of the course you will be required to produce a piece of work based upon a clinically-related project that is relevant to your practice. Once you have selected a specific project, you will submit a project summary/proposal of approximately 1,500 words. Following the approval of your proposal you will then complete a 10,500 word professional project.
To produce the professional project you will continue to study online. Much of the work is self-directed, however you will receive guidance from your tutor throughout the module.
Due to the online nature of the course, you will be expected to regularly login and participate in the course - ideally on a daily basis. Students are recommended to spend around two hours per day on their studies. Our dedicated Student Support Team are also available to help with any problems you may face. From navigating our online platform to advising you on deadlines, our team can assist with any questions or challenges you may have along the way.
Assessments are built into the learning. Each week you work through clinical cases with your tutor; those discussions are the core of both the teaching and the marks.
Academic Forum - 40% +
- Every week students are presented with two/three clinical case-based scenarios that are reflective of every day clinical practice and research.
- Tutors will post a number of questions and prompts to aid students in a formal discussion of each case.
- These discussions are facilitated throughout by your tutor and are then assessed at the end of every module.
Module Assignment - 20% +
For this assessment, students will work on a group assignment and/or an individual assignment.
- Group assignments are designed to hone skills in the multidisciplinary, holistic approach to modern treatments and patient management by requiring group participation in a single piece of work.
- Individual assignments are designed to hone skills in academic career progression through such tasks as reviewing papers, developing scientific posters or abstracts, peer-reviewing, social media activities, patient information leaflets and essays.
Reflective Journal - 10% +
The reflective journal is used by students throughout each module to monitor personal progress. This is guided by weekly feedback from your tutor and is graded at the end of every module. The journal typically includes the following:
- Initial expectations and reasons for taking the course.
- Module and/or personal learning objectives.
- Description of events, issues and learning points within current personal practice.
- Change in every day practice due to knowledge gained on each module.
- A description of what has been learned during the module.
Case-Based Examination - 30% +
- Students are provided with case-based problems in the form of a one-hour timed examination.
- The exam consists of 30 'Single Best Answer' questions.
- Students are required to complete the exam online within the set time.
Entry requirements
Since our courses are conducted entirely online, they are accessible to both UK and international registered healthcare professionals.
Applicants will typically hold a first degree or equivalent (including international qualifications) in a relevant professional healthcare field, such as a medical or nursing degree.
Registered healthcare professionals without these recognised qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account. In some cases, applicants may be asked to submit a piece of work for assessment in order to confirm that they are able to work comfortably at postgraduate level, and demonstrate the requisite clinical and professional knowledge.

Proficiency in the English language is essential to completing our courses. If English is not your first language, we ask for proof of competency during the application process. We are able to accept an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 for each band) or an equivalent qualification.

Are the courses recognised outside of the UK? +
As each Medical Council has their own rules/regulations with regard to Postgraduate study we recommend that you contact your local Medical Council with regard to recognition.
Upon completion of the course the University would invite you to a graduation ceremony and provide your certificate which makes no reference to the fact that the course was studied online and is therefore typically recognised the same as any other UK University qualification.
Rest assured, the overall Postgraduate Diploma carries a total of 1,200 CPD points, with the MSc an additional 600 CPD points, and all official certifications are issued directly by the University.
How do online courses work? +
When you study one of our programmes you may be surprised to find that there are no lectures or seminars. Your learning will be self-directed meaning that rather than being told information you find it for yourself (with tutor guidance and support). We do this via a series of clinically rich scenarios which your tutor will post on our academic forum which you and your classmates will research, respond to and discuss.
You will be assessed through the Academic Forum, Reflective Journal and Assignments. Learning will be carried out using our online learning platform: Moodle.
You can study whenever and wherever you want - our programmes are totally flexible to fit around your other work and life commitments.
How much time will I need to spend on the course each week? +
The course is specifically designed so that part of your study is the application of theory to practice in your day job.
We typically suggest that students aim to log into the Moodle platform daily. We recommend a "little and often" approach for reading, reflection and/or posting. High achieving students will typically spend 1-2 hours dedicated to their studies a day; 10 hours per week is sufficient time to spend on the platform.
Those who cannot dedicate more time than once/twice per week may struggle with the demands of this postgraduate programme.
Is the course completely online? +
Yes, everything is done entirely online through our learning platform, Moodle. You do not need to attend the University.

Many of our international students provide an EMI (English Medium Instruction) letter from their previous institution. This letter should confirm that you were taught in the medium of English. It is a popular and widely accepted form of proof, especially if you have completed prior academic studies in English.

Our Flexible Instalment Plan is designed to offer ultimate flexibility to pay for your programme. You have the choice of two payment options:
Make an Upfront Payment in Full: For those who prefer to settle their fees upfront, you can pay the full amount at the beginning of your programme.
Interest-Free Payments: Alternatively, you can choose to spread your payments out with interest-free instalments every month for the duration of your course.

What discounts are available, and how much can I save? +
We currently offer two discounts: the Early Bird Discount and the Action Taker Discount. The Early Bird discount allows you to save up to £500 or more, available only to self-funders and is a limited-time offer that runs for the entirety of November for the March cohort or the entirety of May for the September cohort. Our Action Taker Discount allows you to save up to £150 off for PGCert and £250 off for PGDip/2-year MSc programmes. To qualify for Action Takers, you must pay the deposit within 7 days of acceptance.
For Early Bird Discounts, the discount is visible if your application and acceptance are completed within the required timeframe. For Action Taker Discounts, it will reflect once conditions are met.
